Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls

Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls, also known as 'Goi Cuon' in Vietnamese, can be made in a number of different ways. The main ingredients for Rice Paper Rolls are rice vermicelli, which are the noodles and of course the rice paper wraps. Herbs and fresh vegetables such as cucumbers, lettuce and carrots are optional.

These wraps of often dipped into a sauce before each bite for extra flavour. Any preferable sauce can be used, however the main dipping sauce used are Vietnamese Fish sauce (also called Nuoc Mam), satay dipping sauce or Hoisin Sauce.

Of course, you may choose anything you like as your main ingredient, but the the main and most popular types of Rice Paper Rolls that can be made are:

The method of making these Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls are similar for each type other than the way the main ingredient is cooked.

1. Place the rice vermicelli in a large bowl or pan of boiling water and leave it to soak until the noodles have softened. Once that has been done, drain and rinse the noodles under cold water and drain it again.

2. Cook your main ingredient, whether it's grilled chicken, steamed chicken, steamed pork, prawns, beef cooked on a non-stick fry pan etc. and prepare the sauce of your choosing.

3. Place boiled water into a large bowl.

4. Dip one sheet of a rice paper into the hot water, making sure every bit of it becomes soft. Once this is done, place the rice paper sheet onto a plate.

5. If you choose to have fresh vegetables and herbs in your wrap, place that towards the lower end of the wrap in the middle first.

6. Place a handful of vermicelli noodles over the vegetables in the same spot, making sure it's in the middle and doesn't fill up towards the end of the rice paper wrap.

7. Place your main ingredient over those noodles (prawn, beef, chicken, pork etc.).

8. Start folding the wrap up from the end where the ingredients are towards the other end. When you reach the middle point, fold the two sides in and then continue folding the wrap until it has been completed wrapped.

9. Dip your wrap into your preferred sauce and enjoy!
